Overtime is more prevalent in extended hours operations than day-only operations. It also can cause greater problems. This study explains why overtime occurs; why employees are prepared to work overtime; the benefits of using overtime; the optimum levels of overtime for an operation; negative consequences for health, productivity, and cost when levels of overtime are too high; and the legal issues concerning employment and accident litigation linked to overtime.

The information and solutions-based advice provided in this report will allow managers to make informed decisions about how to manage overtime efficiently and safely.
